Fun for Kids of All Ages
Hillboro’s annual Christmas celebration, Christmas in the Foothills,
takes place on Saturday, December 6, at locations throughout the picturesque,
historic village on State Highway 152, the road between Silver City
and I-25. Highlights of the event include a kids-only Christmas Market,
where kids 12 and under can purchase inexpensive gifts for family
and friends, an exciting array of vendors selling specialty gifts
in the Community Center, and the ever-popular $49.99 Art Show and
Sale. The $49.99 Art Show and Sale has a long history in Hillsboro,
begun as a way for local artists, authors, and craftspeople to give
back to the community at Christmastime. Each item in the Art Show
will be sold for $49.99, and all items are guaranteed to be worth
more than that—many several times more! Anyone attending Christmas
in the Foothills can purchase tickets for $1 each to place in a sealed
container associated with an art item. The person whose ticket is
chosen pays only $49.99 and goes home with a unique and valuable addition
to his or her home, whether painting, photograph, furniture item,
or other treasure. One-dollar tickets can also be purchased for a
chance to win the original framed watercolor painting, Christmas Quail
by Jane Dobrott, which has been reproduced as the Christmas in the
Foothills 2008 poster. Posters will be available for $25 each at all
Hillsboro merchants. A horse-drawn wagon will take visitors between
the main stage of events at the Hillsboro Community Center back and
forth to Main Street merchants, including restaurants, antique shops
and an arts and crafts shop. Musicians and singers will provide seasonal
and regional accompaniment to the festivities, and free hot cider
and hot chocolate will be available along Main Street. Special this
year, the Forest Service will have tree-cutting permits available
for purchase.
